How Is a Soft Enamel Pin Made?
First lets clear something up in case you are wondering. Soft enamel has nothing to do with the quality of the metal. Instead it describes the type of pain that is applied.
- Soft enamel lapel pins start with the same process as our die struck lapel pins. (But that is where the similarity ends).
- We start off with a metal sheet in the color of your choice. (Gold, silver etc.)
- Based on your design die is cutting molds are prepared.
- The design image is then stamped on the sheet metal you chose.
- Your pins are cut out to the outline of the design shape.
- Next they are plated.
- The recessed areas are filled with the enamel colors by hand, one at a time, using syringes. The paint does not go above the ridges so that you can still feel the ridges with your fingers.
- We then wipe off all excess paint from the raised metal surfaces.
- Raised areas can be highly polished at your request
- Next it is off to the ovens where your pins will be baked at 450°Fahrenheit for 12 - 15 minutes.
- Want extra protection to prevent color fading and cracking down the road? At no additional cost to you we can add a clear epoxy protective dome to protect them.
When Would I Choose A Soft Enamel Lapel Pins?
Remember that these pins are die cut, so that means there will be a thin metal rim outlining each separate color of your pin. So it is generally best to use soft enamel on designs that require clearly separated colors. If it is hard to understand what we are trying to explain then simply look at the pictures below. Does your design require fine details? Then you would probably want to look at the offset printed lapel pins or silk screen lapel pins that we offer.
