Employee Retention: Here Is A Quick Idea…
You think your employees are happy…but are they?
If employees are a business best resource why don’t employees many times feel that way? If you want to hold on to your best people you need to let them know they are doing a good job now and then.
You may be thinking right now, “My people already KNOW how I feel about them.” That’s like the husband who says about his affection starved wife, “She knows I love her.” The truth is unless we tell them and tell them often… it ain’t so!
It’s true… a recent survey on what makes employees happy at their job was given to employees to fill out. The EMPLOYERS were also asked to fill it out and ANTICIPATE what their employees would say.
Now here is the funny thing– employers ranked “money” at the top and “appreciation for the job they were doing” at number 9 or 10.
Guess what… It was practically just the opposite. While money is important to your workers they consistently picked “feeling appreciated for the work that they do” as more important. Believe it or not, money ranked 4th or 5th behind it.
What is the lesson here? Take the time to say thanks you are doing a great job. The funny thing is that it doesn’t cost a lot of money or time on your part. It is basically a mind shift that is required.
One easy way to do this is with our award pins, years of service lapel pins or medals of appreciation. Now while a medal is nice it is only a part of the solution.
Take this test for a moment. Think of the last time you commended or praised someone genuinely for a job well done? How about the time before that? Commending people is the best way to reinforce positive behaviors. Unfortunately most managers are very selfish when it comes to giving out commendation. It says a lot about us doesn’t it?
Why not thank someone for a job well done today. Remember it is the most effective way of employee retention.
